Answer:
Catholics thought that the foundation of the Church is Peter. They used the Matthew 16:18 as back-up to their claim.
But is it really Peter who was placed by Christ as the foundation of the Church?
This is what has been written in Matthew 16:18:
18And I tell you that you are Peter,[a] and on this rock I will build my church, and the gates of Hades[b] will not overcome it.[c] (NIV)From this verse, Catholics thought that the rock mentioned by Christ of which the church would be built on it was Peter because Peter means rock. They failed to noticed that Christ did not say "You are Peter, and on YOU the rock I will build my church." What Christ mentioned is "on THIS rock I will build my Church".
In other words, Christ called Simon as rock (Peter) but when he said "on this rock" Christ was referring to himself.
